"2013 Portland CBC, Marine Park and Columbia River near Vancouver, Washington ... January 4, 2014"
The Trip:    Audubon's Christmas Bird Count ... the "Vancouver slice" of the Portland CBC ... overcast drizzly and cold morning ... we enlarged the scope of the "slice" this year to include the lower point of Vancouver's Marine Park, as it was shown to be in the circle via a Google Portland Circle map ... also included in the circle is Vancouver's Land Bridge and the lower end of the Vancouver airport runways ... (note, previous years (2011, 2012) map used did not include the Land Bridge or end of the runways) ... had three nice folks helping us ... our thanks to all, especially Tait A. doing all the gulls at Marine Park !!!!! ... Canon SX50.

(1) ... Scaup: across the Columbia directly across from Tomahawk Island were a string of Scaup, apprximately 1,000 strong, too far for us to tell species or oddities, visible to us but possibly not visible from the Oregon side due to treed land between the Columbia and the eastern Tomahawk Island marina.

(2) ... Red-breasted Merganser: we had one female at the beginning of the count, 8:00, at approximately RM 107.5 ... we walked past her and left her behind us ... we then ran into a second female Red-breasted Merganser approximately 2 hours later (10:00-10:30) at approximate RM 106.5, who then flew towards the Oregon side ... we did not see her land but we really didn't watch either ... on our return to the beginning of our count location at approximately 12:00, there still was a female Red-breasted Merganser at the location where we had seen the first one ... so, there were either 2 or there was only one who was flying between the two spots.

(3) ... American Crow: there were an additional 100 American Crows just outside the count circle but yet visible from the count circle.
