Turkey Vulture:
The Turkey Vulture is one of the few birds of prey that uses the sense of smell to locate food. Their name is in reference to their heads; the featherless red head gives them the appearance of a Wild Turkey. These birds have also been called Buzzards, John Crow, Red-necked Buzzard, and Carrion Crows. Lewis and Clark referred to them as "turkey buzzard".
The name "Vulture" is from the Latin vello meaning "to pluck or tear", describing the bird's feeding method.
"... I saw a turkey buzzard which is the 3rd which I have Seen west of the rocky mountains.
the 1st was on the 7 inst. above quick Sand river. ..."
... Captain William Clark, April 12, 1806, while in the Bonneville Dam to Cascade Locks area
