"Merlin"
Merlin:    An early name for the Merlin (Falco columbarius) was "Pigeon Hawk". Similar species names existed and eventually were grouped together with the Merlin.

Audubon, in 1840, called the bird the "Pigeon Hawk" (Falco columbarius), and stated that Wilson called the bird the "Pigeon Hawk" (Falco columbarius), Bonaparte listed a Falco columbarius, Nuttall listed both a "Pigeon Hawk" (Falco columbarius) and a "Little Corporal Hawk" (Falco temerarius), and Richardson and Swainson in Fauna Boreali Americana (1831) described the "Merlin" (Falco aeslon) and the "Pigeon-Hawk" (Falco columbarius).

In 1873, William Wood wrote in his article "The Game Falcons of New England" (The American Naturalist):   "... The little corporal hawk of Nuttall, and the Falco temerarius of Audubon, are one and the same bird, and are now considered by naturalists the adult of the pigeon hawk ..."

Nuttall in his "A popular handbook of the Birds of the United States and Canada" (1903) differentiates between the "Pigeon Hawk" (Falco columbarius) and the "European Merlin" (Falco regulus).

"The Pigeon Hawk ranges very extensively over the United States, and extends its migrations far beyond their limits on either side. Mr. Townsend found it on the Rocky Mountains, as well as along the shores of the Columbia River."

-- James J. Audubon, 1840, Birds of America, vol.1, p.88
